Idli Chilly

Hey guys!!! Here is another one of a famous fusion dishes that is made in many restaurants in Mumbai. Idli Chilli is basically a fusion of South Indian dish Idli made in Chinese style. It tastes very yummy and if you are tired of the same old idlis you can try this fusion version. I have made oats Idli for my recipe you can make it using regular Idli batter also. So lets get cooking…..

Ingredients:

For Idli:

Oats (powdered)- 1 1/2 cup

Masala Oats (powdered) (classic flavor)- 1/2 cup

Rava/Semolina – 1/2 cup

Rice Flour- 1/4 cup

Ginger-Green Chilli Paste- 2 tbsp

Curd- 1/4 cup

Water – 1 1/2 cup

Fruit Salt – 1 tsp

Salt as per taste

Oil for frying

For Chinese Gravy:

Oil – 2 tbsp

Onion (Diced) – 1 large

Spring Onion White – 3-4 bulbs (chopped)

Capsicum (Diced) – 1 medium

Cabbage (Chopped) – 1/2 cup

Ginger-Garlic-Green chilli paste- 2 tbsp

Soya Sauce- 2 tsp

Red chilli Sauce- 2 tsp

Black Pepper Powder – 1/2 tsp

Vinegar – 1 tsp

Water – 1/4 cup

1 tbsp Cornflour mixed in 1/4 cup water

Spring Onion greens for garnishing

Salt as per taste

Method:

For Idli:

1. In a mixing bowl mix all the ingredients for the idli as listed above except the water.

2. Once all mixed well add the water. the batter should not be too thin nor too thick in consistency. Let this batter rest for at-least half an hour.

3. After half an hour check the batter and give it a mix if you feel it has become too thick add some water (not more than 1/2 a cup). Now add the fruit salt and mix it.

4. Pour the idli batter in the idli stands and let it cook for 15 minutes on high flame.

5. Once cooked let it cool for 10 mins. Now make four pieces out of one idli and fry them directly in oil at low flame till it turns golden brown.

For Chinese Gravy:

1. In a wok take the oil and let it become warm. now add the ginger-garlic-green chilli paste and saute for a minute. Now add the capsicum, onion, spring onion white and cabbage and saute for 5 mins.

2. Do not overcook the veges keep them half cooked. Now add the soya sauce, red chilli sauce and black pepper powder.

3. Now add the water and let it cook for 3-4 mins. Now add the cornflour slurry, vinegar and salt.

4. Finally add the fried idli pieces and cover the cook for 2 mins. Do not overcook the idlis should be little crispy.

5. Take in serving plate and garnish with spring onion greens.
