Masala Tadka Khichidi

Hey guys! Khichidi is my comfort food and for many it is just something you eat when you are sick which is not true. You can now have a tasty, warm bowl of this masala khichidi when you are too low to cook anything else or just plain lazy. Lets get cooking….

Ingredients:

Yellow moong dal – 1 and 1/2 cups

Rice (use any rice) – 1/2 cup

Water – 6 cups

Boiled green peas – 1/2 cup

Onion (finely chopped) – 1 large

Tomato (finely chopped) – 1 large

Capsicum (finely chopped) – 1 small

Garlic paste – 1 tsp

Ginger paste – 1 tsp

Garlic (finely chopped) – 1 tsp

Cumin seeds/ Jeera – 1 tsp

Mustard seeds/ Rai – 1 tsp

Green chilies (finely chopped) – 3 pieces

Ghee/Clarified butter – 1 tbsp

Asafoetida/hing – 1/2 tsp

Whole dry red chilies (kashmiri) – 3 pieces

Oil – 1 tbsp

salt as per taste

Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp

Red chili powder – 1 tsp

Garam masala powder – 1 tsp

Method:

1) Wash and soak the yellow moong dal and rice. Now cook this in a pressure cooker (approx 5-6 whistles) by adding 5 cups of water, salt and turmeric powder.

2) In a large wok add oil. Let it become warm. Add the asafoetida/hing, cumin seeds and mustard seeds and let them crackle. Now add the ginger paste, garlic paste, green chilies and saute for few minutes.

3)Now add the capsicum, onion and tomato and saute till the oil separates. Now add the garam masala powder and salt and mix it well.

4)Now add the khichidi to this and remaining 1 cup of water and mix it all well.

5) In small pan add the ghee/clarified butter, dry red chilies, chopped garlic and red chili powder and once it is warm pour this tempering/tadka on the khichidi and mix it in gently. Serve warm.
